On December 5, 2015, SBCA received a $8,860 grant from the Austin Parks Foundation to replace the existing kiosk and add additional educational signage at Goat Cave Karst Preserve, located at 3900 Deer Lane in south Austin. Goat Cave, like most cave and karst features, is a conduit for water from the surface to the underground water system. The eight-acre preserve sits atop a portion of the Edwards Limestone and contains water-formed caves, sinkholes and smaller openings. A pleasant 0.6 mile shaded trail winds through the honey-combed limestone preserve. The current dilapidated kiosk contains limited and outdated information. SBCA will work with Austin Watershed Protection Department, UT’s Bureau of Economic Geology, Austin Parks & Recreation Department and two bordering neighborhood associations on the project. Volunteers will be needed in late summer or early fall to remove the old kiosk and dilapidated benches and to help install the new kiosk and signage. To sign up for volunteer alerts, register for our e-newsletter.
